It has come to the company’s attention, that there are at least two small “glass repair” operators who are using window film to hide damage and distortion they are causing to the glass. This was a common bad practice in the past , used  to reduce repair time and mask poor workmanship. It was a malpractice believed to have been outlawed and driven out of the industry, but appears to have been resurrected in certain quarters.

Peter Hayward, Managing Director of Glass Polish Ltd, explains: “Instead of executing a full distortion free repair, shady operators will take a course abrasive, usually designed for working with metal rather than glass, and completely destroy the glass all over. Although on the surface the scratches are apparently removed, this approach leaves the glass opaque. When the window film is placed over the damage, this initially has the effect of disguising the damage to the glass by covering the opaque glass”.

He continues: “The problem is that after 6 to 12 months, if the glass is in a high traffic area the film will need to be replaced. At this juncture, when the film is removed the damaged opaque glass is uncovered leaving the owner of the property in an invidious position: either to re-film the glass and start the cycle again or to employ a professional glass repair company to complete the work that should of been done in the first place. Either way, the client ends up paying at least twice!!”.
